Counseling Compact
Expanding Access to Therapy Across State Lines
The Counseling Compact is an important step toward making mental health care more accessible. It allows eligible licensed professional counselors to provide services to clients in participating states without having to obtain a separate full professional license in each state.
As an Ohio-licensed professional counselor, I hold Counseling Compact privileges that allow me to provide telehealth counseling services to eligible clients located in Minnesota and Georgia. As additional states become available to me through the Compact, I may expand the states in which I can provide services.
What Does This Mean for You?
Counseling Compact privileges are different from holding a full counseling license in another state. I remain licensed in Ohio, while my Compact privileges authorize me to provide counseling services to clients located in participating states where I have obtained the appropriate privilege to practice.
This means:
Services are provided through telehealth only. I am able to work with you remotely while you are physically located in a state where I hold Counseling Compact privileges.
You do not need to live in Ohio. If you are located in Minnesota or Georgia, I may be able to provide services to you through my Compact privileges.
Services are self-pay. Because I am not contracted with insurance companies in these states, Counseling Compact services are provided on a self-pay basis. I can provide documentation for you to submit to your insurance company if your plan offers out-of-network benefits.
Your location matters. Because counseling regulations are based on where the client is physically located at the time of the session, you must be located in a state where I am authorized to practice when we meet.
Who Can I Work With?
At this time, I hold Counseling Compact privileges in Minnesota and Georgia.
The Counseling Compact continues to expand, and I may obtain privileges in additional participating states in the future.
